Ultrasound
Dealing with chronic pain? Ultrasound therapy can help.
Ultrasound therapy may be the remedy to your problem if you have had unexplained aches and pains. As a specialized physical treatment method that uses mechanical energy to encourage the healing process, this therapy will help you to recover, regardless of the pain or distress you're under. This treatment may be used for pain management or relief, injury treatment, and everyday activity improvement.
Is ultrasound therapy right for my condition?
Ultrasound treatments can treat a vast variety of conditions. Some common conditions that ultrasound helps treat include, but are not limited to: sprains, strains, and tears; fractures; muscle spasms; tendinitis; arthritis; bursitis; and frozen shoulder.
These treatments help to increase blood flow, relieve pain, reduce swelling and inflammation, and promote the healing of tissues.
What to expect from ultrasound therapy
At your initial appointment, a Wilmington, NC physical therapist will conduct a physical exam that will help in the diagnosis of your condition and how it should be treated.
At Lumina Wellness Physical Therapy, our highly trained physical therapists will create a treatment plan for your specific symptoms and needs that takes into account your medical history and any additional health restrictions you may have.
How does ultrasound therapy work?
Ultrasound treatments involve the use of sound waves. These sound waves vibrate your tissues, producing friction at the molecular level. This friction causes the temperature of the tissues to increase, which naturally treats conditions affecting the muscles, ligaments, and bones.
While heating packs can be effective in warming up an affected area, they are unable to reach the tissues in the same way that ultrasound technology can. Our Wilmington, NC physical therapists will use a generous amount of gel on the surface of the applicator to minimize friction and promote the transmission of the sound waves. These waves are then absorbed by your tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues resulting in the reduction of pain and increased blood circulation.
Are there different kinds of ultrasound treatments?
There are two main kinds of treatments:
Thermal benefits
The thermal energy (heat) produced during your treatment can loosen up tight muscles and tendons, reduce pain, increase blood circulation, and allow for an easier stretch of the muscles.
Non-thermal benefits
The energy that enters the body creates tiny gas bubbles that gather around the tissues. These bubbles expand and contract at a rapid pace (cavitation), which can help in repairing damaged tissue such as scar tissue or cellulite, and loosening up the muscles.
